In a great night for ABC Television, these two dramas received awards for:

Most Outstanding Miniseries or Telemovie: The Secret River

Most Outstanding Supporting Actor: Tim Minchin, The Secret River

Most Outstanding Actress: Deborah Mailman, Redfern Now: Promise Me

“Both The Secret River and Redfern Now are dramas of exceptional quality which share important stories of Australia’s past and present. They both showcase great performances, writing, direction and production. It’s wonderful to see the efforts of all involved acknowledged and celebrated with these awards.” said Sharon Ramsay-Luck, Head of Sales & Business Development, ABC Commercial. “Congratulations to all the winners.”

The ABC was the most successful Australian network overall, winning eight awards in total and confirming that the ABC is leading the way for quality Australian television.

The Secret River dramatises the British colonisation of Australia, and is an epic tragedy in which a good man is compelled by desperation, fear, ambition and love for his family to participate in a crime of inhuman savagery. Produced by Ruby Entertainment and also starring Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Mr Selfridge, Raven, Dracula) and Sarah Snook (The Dressmaker, Steve Jobs and The Beautiful Lie), it’s based on Kate Grenville’s Man Booker nominated bestselling novel.

Redfern Now: Promise Me is a gripping, heartbreaking and uplifting telemovie that explores the impact of a violent crime on two women and the fight for justice that ensues. Produced by Blackfella Films, this is the third installment of the acclaimed and award-winning Redfern Now series. This series explores contemporary inner city Indigenous life and is a collaboration of some of Australia’s most celebrated writers/actors/directors with one of the world’s greatest storytellers, Emmy and BAFTA award-winner Jimmy McGovern (The Street, Cracker, The Lakes).
