Ronny Chieng: International Student

Meet Ronny Chieng. He’s a Malaysian student who’s come to Australia to study law. He’s smart, driven and competitive, which would make him the perfect law student, if he actually wanted to be a lawyer.

As we follow Ronny from his first day on campus to the final exam of semester, he’ll face binge-drinking Australians, pompous private school kids, hyper competitive Asian students and a law professor who runs his class like a cage fight. Not to mention the brash American exchange student who crash lands at International House taking it from a quiet, studious space to a party frat house in less than 24 hours.

Luckily, Ronny makes an unlikely ally in Asher Angus, a fellow first year law student from a small country town who’s laconic nature and eternal optimism makes her the absolute opposite of Ronny. But the one thing they do share is a feeling of being on the outside looking in, and seeing a bunch of idiots staring back.

Based on Ronny’s real life experience as an international student,
Ronny Chieng: International Student is a show about being caught between worlds; between childhood and adulthood, between your old life and your new life, between your parent’s expectations and your own dreams, even if you haven’t worked out what they are. Mostly it’s about the stupid stuff that happens when you’re young, and don’t know what the hell you’re doing.

A Sticky Pictures Production “Ronny Chieng: International Student” stars Ronny Chieng, a stand-up comedian, actor and correspondent on the multi-Emmy award winning US series “The Daily Show”. The series was co-created by Ronny Chieng and Declan Fay.
