Message Stick - Babinda Boulders/Surf Dreaming
This episode of Message Stick takes us to far north Queensland to the small town of Babinda. On the outskirts of town there's a popular swimming hole known officially as Babinda Boulders..but to the locals..it's the Devil's Pool. So far, the waterhole has claimed 16 lives... all of them young male travellers. The area is cursed by an ancient dreamtime legend. It is thought that the spirit of a love-sick young woman haunts the swimming hole. She lures young male travellers to their death because she's searching for her forbidden love, a warrior from a visiting tribe. Message Stick producers Lou Glover and Paula Maling travelled to Babinda Boulders to explore the story of how this ancient curse is still claiming lives.
This episode also features a short snapshot of an innovative youth program in Sydney. It's called Sunset Dreaming and it involves taking kids from the 'block' in Redfern to Bondi Beach for surfing lessons. Although the beach is only a few kilometres down the road, it's a lifetime away for many of these 'at risk' youth.
